Brut

For Marie, a prospective medical student, the catastrophe starts every day with waking up. She lives in social isolation with her extremely dominant mother, a successful gynecologist. For her entire life, Marie has suffered from her mother’s emotional blackmail. It seems as though the umbilical cord had never been cut. But now, Marie finally wants to escape this dependency and seeks her first sexual contact with men in order to force her mother into resignation.

The diploma film of promising Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg graduate Constantin Hatz forms the conclusion of a three-part cycle on mother-child relationships. Counting on two stand-out lead performances in long uncut scenes, BRUT explores in razor-sharp dialogues the shallows of a symbiotic world of its own. With its dreamlike sense of rhythm the tour-de-force chamberpiece creates a vortex which doesn't let go until the very last shot.
