Antonio works as a chauffeur in Rome. Also outside of his work, he likes driving through the city at night and identifies with the lonesome hero of his science fiction novels. One night he meets Maria, a troubled, lonely woman, and her daughter Lisa. He manages to enter in their life, and starts to take care of them. He discovers that Maria owes a lot of money to small time crook Saverio, and while becoming his driver, secretly starts to pay her debts.
