Award-Winners and Jury Rationales

Prize for Best Film - Crystal Larch

Aloys

by Tobias Nölle

In the third year of the Saas-Fee FilmFest, the Jury was intrigued and challenged by a striking debut feature. A deep-dive into the strangeness, sorrow and longing of one man’s mind, this impeccably composed film guides the audience to its emotional core through condensed windows, misty landscapes and claustrophobic apartments. With its crepuscular, muted tones, the stunning cinematography combines with the inventive sound design to create a unique sensory experience.

We found this to be an original and personal take on the genre of surveillance films, as well as a touching showcase for its star Georg Friedrich. The Crystal Larch for Best Film goes to Tobias Nölle’s ALOYS.

Critics Choice

Wild

by Nicolette Krebitz

The Jury of critics rewards their prize to a film that encapsulates like no other film in this year’s competition the essence of cinema. It takes the viewer to a place between dream and reality, where individual desires unfold freely beyond the restrictions of social conventions. In order to reach this state, the film finds raw images, that on the one hand describe the gravity of this rite of passage and at the same time embrace empathically the fragile constitution of its main protagonist. This succceeds particularly well due to the film’s main acctress who exposes herself figuratively and literally and therefore transcends the limits between the physical self and society. With her movie, the directress has put herself in the tradition of renowned transgressive female filmmakers such as Chantal Ackerman, Catherine Breillat and Claire Denis. This year’s critic award goes to „Wild“ by Nicolette Krebitz.
